This is the document that identifies and accompanies the shipment. Sorting and delivery operations are based on the information provided by the sender in the Waybill (in italian Lettera di Vettura, LdV), so it is essential that all data be filled in clearly, completely and correctly.
In addition to the sender’s and receiver’s first and last names, it is necessary to state on the Waybill:
- the complete address of both, with house number and – if present – also number of the interior and/or staircase;
- City, Country and Postal Code (ZIP Code);
- contents of the package;
- destination to give the shipment in case of non-delivery, depending on the chosen option;
- for parcels to non-EU countries, a detailed description of the contents, customs tariff code, quantity, weight, value and country of origin of the goods are also required.
It is also recommended to state the telephone number and e-mail of the sender and recipient.
The Waybill must be clearly and legibly filled out, preferably in capital letters. The sender must affix the two required signatures, which also count as acceptance of the General Terms and Conditions of Service (shown in excerpt on the back of the document and in full on this site).
Use the online customs assistance to check the documents to attach to the shipment and the items allowed.

For more information call 803 160 and +39 06 4526 3160*.
*803 160, toll-free number reachable from a landline; +39 06 4526 3160 (from Italy and abroad), number reachable from landlines and mobile phones subject to the costs of the telephone operator from which the call is made. The numbers are available from Monday to Saturday – excluding public holidays – from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
We recommend the use of filling material. If you use a previously used box, make sure it is in good condition and remove any labels or codes from previous shipments.
The box must have adequate free space on which to affix the Waybill. On the same side, directly on the parcel, the sender’s and recipient’s data should be written, so as to prevent the parcel from becoming anonymous in the event that the Waybill is detached.
For more information, see the International Shipping Guide - Poste Delivery International Standard (PDF).
Poste Delivery International Standard includes a range of additional services, ideal for making your shipments more efficient and secure:
Cash-on-delivery
- This allows the amount determined by the sender to be collected when the item is handed over to the addressee. Collection is by paper money order.
- The outside of the envelope must be marked “Remboursement” and the amount to be collected must be state in euro.
- The additional price to be paid at the time of dispatch, to be borne by the sender, is € 3.05.
- The service is available as a paper money order for Cyprus and Portugal.
For more details, see the rates for cash-on-delivery items.
Insurance
- This allows insurance to be activated for the actual value of the contents of the parcel – which must be stated on the Waybill – up to the maximum value permitted in Italy and in the country of destination, including for certain types of goods that are not ordinarily permitted and for which insurance is mandatory.
- The sender must indicate on the delivery note – in the appropriate box marked “Declared value/ Valeur dèclarèe” – the amount of the insured value in numbers and letters.
See the insurance rates and the list of countries to which an insured parcel can be sent (PDF).
Shipments held in storage
In the event of non-delivery, the shipment will be stored at the destination foreign office. Storage times vary from 15 days to 1 month, depending on the country of destination of the shipment. In exceptional cases, the period may be extended up to two months if the legislation of the destination country allows for it.
Return to sender
In cases of non-delivery, the sender may request that the shipment be abandoned, at no additional cost, or that it be returned at a cost determined by the country of destination.
To find out in which cases compensation or refund is possible, consult the Postal Service Charters.
Boxes suitable for all types of shipping (both ordinary and insured) are available at Post Offices. Boxes are equipped with burglar-proof seals and offer high standards of durability and security.
